Jeff Bukantz

He's the fencing captain who led the U.S. to Olympic gold in 2004… and he's available to speak at your next event.

It was a summer marked by terrorist threats and anti-American sentiment, but Jeff Bukantz had only one concern on his mind: preparing his players for victory.

Whatever he did worked. As Captain of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team, Jeff led the underdog American fencers to their first gold medal in over 100 years and first medal of any kind since 1984. The two victories rocked the international fencing world, and were capped off by a flag-waving celebration that became a patriotic symbol of the 2004 Athens games.

Now back in the U.S., Jeff is sharing his Olympic experiences with the country in a keynote presentation guaranteed to entertain, enlighten, and inspire. Here are a few of the messages audiences will take away from Jeff's story:

Keep your eye on the prize: Combining the chutzpah he learned from his Holocaust survivor mother and the work ethic he acquired from his four-time Olympian dad, Jeff climbed the ranks of the fencing world, but always fell short of making the Olympic team - until 1984. Hear how the twin virtues - Patience and Persistence - eventually guided Jeff to his goal.

Leaders set a positive example: Jeff wasn't called the John McEnroe of fencing for nothing. Before he was a respected leader on the strip, he was every referee's nightmare and an obnoxious young punk to the other fencers he faced. Learn how his antagonistic attitude nearly got him removed from the sport and what he did to rebuild his reputation and emerge as a leader.

Win or lose, do everything with class: In life and in sports, sometimes the calls just don't go your way. You can either stand there and pout, or move along to the next challenge at hand. Discover how Jeff's Olympic team members dealt with defeat, and what you can learn from their examples.

Jeff is a member of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Rules Commission, the United States Fencing Association (USFA) High Performance Committee, and Chairman of the USFA Fencing Officials Commission.
